Peaceful Paddling
There’s nothing quite like cruising on glassy water at sunrise in a canoe or kayak. Hit the water at these incredible boating spots.
Chassahowitzka River
This waterway is variable in size and appearance. Some sections are wide and open, while others are narrow, passing under the shade of moss-covered oaks. Its clear water is great for swimming, especially in the shallower spots, where boaters can wade, stop for a rest, or even make use of a rope swing. If you’re lucky, you may see manatees and alligators, but you’re sure to encounter many fish, turtles and aquatic birds.
Homosassa River
Put your kayak or canoe in at any of the launch spots along this busy river and you’ll enjoy a fun time on the water. What’s more, there are many waterfront establishments along the way where you can enjoy a cool beverage and bite to eat. The Homosassa River runs from its local source springs to the Gulf of Mexico.
Bird Watching
In the nearby town of Crystal River, St. Martin’s Marsh Aquatic Preserve is a fantastic place to spot over 300 species of local waterfowl, including Great Blue Herons, white ibis, pelicans, terns, ospreys, egrets, and multiple species of plovers.
Foodie Frenzy
While Homosassa is full of amazing restaurants, it’s also a great place to grill out with friends. On any given weekend while the weather is mild, there are a few farmers markets in the area. Grab some locally raised meats, fresh veggies, and maybe even a quart of ginger bubbly from Vitality Kombucha (out of Ocala).

Scuba Diving & Snorkeling
Homosassa, Florida, is mainly known for its springs and manatee experiences. However, the region doesn’t typically feature traditional scuba diving locations like coral reefs or shipwrecks. Instead, it offers unique freshwater diving experiences in crystal-clear springs.

2. Crystal River: Not far from Homosassa, Crystal River offers a range of diving opportunities, particularly in the Three Sisters Springs and Kings Bay. These are some of the best spots to see and swim with manatees.
3. Chassahowitzka River: This river system offers a range of springs and underwater caves for more experienced divers.
Please remember to check local regulations before planning your dive as certain areas may have restrictions to protect wildlife, particularly manatees. Additionally, always prioritize safety, ensuring you have the necessary qualifications and equipment for each dive.
